General Instructions for the Patient

Before the Procedure

  • Someone will contact you 24 hours before the procedure. In the event that no one contacts you, please call the center for specific instructions.
  • Notify your physician before coming to the center if there is any change in your physical condition such as a cold or fever.

The Night Before

  • Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight. Refrain from the use of mints, chewing gum, or cigarettes. Failure to follow these instructions may result in cancellation of your procedure.
  • Please do not take any medications after midnight unless instructed by your physician or our office. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you the first 8 hours after your procedure.

The Day of the Procedure

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Do not wear any type of jewelry. Do not bring money or any other valuables with you.
  • Bring your driver's license and insurance cards with you.
  • Wearing contact lenses is not advised. Please bring glasses so you can read and sign the necessary paperwork. We provide containers for removable dentures and bridgework.

After Your Procedure

  • Before you leave the center, you will be given written instructions for your care at home.
  • Plan to rest the remainder of the day and expect to be drowsy for several hours after your procedure.
  • No driving or operating power tools or equipment for the remainder of the day.
  • Do not make any legal or important decisions for the remainder of the day.
  • A nurse from Endoscopy Center of St. Louis will phone you the day after the procedure to see how you are and answer any questions you might have. Please do not hesitate to call your physician's exchange (located on your discharge instruction sheet) with any questions or problems.

Helpful Reminders

  • Please limit the number of family/friends who will come with you. Seating is limited.
  • Only one family member or friend will be allowed in the pre-care or post-care area.
  • You will need to change into a procedure gown.
  • Women will be asked to provide a urine sample prior to the procedure to avoid any possible anesthesia complications related to pregnancy.
  • Co-pays, deductible and co-insurance payments are due prior to your procedure.
